Data Breach Impacts Over 50K Naperville Students, Staff

Student names and dates of birth may have been compromised, district officials said.

NAPERVILLE, IL -- Some 50,000 students who have attended Naperville-area School Districts 203 and 204 may have had their information compromised in as recent security breach. The breach, which also impacted more than 3,000 teachers and staff, was announced Tuesday as students prepared to head back to school, according to information shared on the Indian Prairie School District website.

Information that may have been compromised includes names, email addresses, and birth dates for students who attended the districts' schools between 2001 and 2016.

The data breach comes through Pearson Clinical Assessments, which handles student assessments for both school districts. The breach, which took place in Nov. 2018, affected over 13,000 schools nationwide.

Pearson Clinical Assessments is offering free credit monitoring to Districts 203 and 204 students and staff whose information may have been stolen in the breach.

In a statement, Adam Smeets, the chief technology officer for District 2o4 said, "Pearson Clinical Assessment has worked with cybersecurity experts to evaluate the incident and assured us that changes have been implemented to prevent this from happening again with their product."
