Jurinek and Patino were at the Astroworld Music Festival in Houston Nov. 5 as an early birthday celebration for Jurinek. Bridget Lescelius, Jurinek's teacher and mentor at Southern Illinois University, told Patch the event was intended to be something of a "dream celebration" for Jurinek.
She recalled Jurinek as a "sweet soul" who "came from a place of goodness."
In a statement after his death, Patino's family remembered the University of Dayton seniors as having a "big heart" and a "passion for helping others."
They added, "We’re comforted by the impact Franco made on hundreds of people over the years and that they will carry a piece of him from now on."
Patino and Jurinek were two of 10 fatalities that resulted from the crowd surge at Astroworld. On Monday, it was announced that a nine-year-old boy died from injuries sustained at Astroworld Music Festival.
At least 31 Astroworld lawsuits had been filed against Live Nation Worldwide, Inc., its subsidiaries, the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation and Scoremore, LLC. Performers Travis Scott and Drake are also named in some of the lawsuits.
