Ice Cream Lovers Scoop It In For Firefighters

Everyone was screaming for ice cream Wednesday night when Baskin-Robbins locations across the country celebrated its 5th Annual 31 Cent Scoop Night.

From 5 to 10 p.m, customers could dig into a 2.5-oz. scoop of their favorite flavor for only 31 cents.

Despite the rain and dreary weather, the on Ogden and Aurora avenues, experienced a steady flow of traffic of customers lining up for their favorite cold treat.

During last year's Scoop Night, more then 4 million scoops of ice cream were given away, according to Baskin-Robbins. With the special event, Baskin-Robbins was also showing its support for firefighters, donating $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). The ice cream purveyor even created a special flavor, "Firehouse 31," a vanilla ice cream with a crunchy atomic fireball ribbon laced with cinnamon and red hot candy pieces.

The special flavor will be available through the end of April in scoops, sundaes and hand-packed pints, quarts and half-gallons.

Founded in 1992, the NFFF honors fallen firefighters and their families by developing and expanding programs designed to remember their efforts.

"We love ice cream and who could say no to a 31 cent scoop," said Teresa Stenmark of Bolingbrook who brought her three kids. "We tried the Firehouse 31 and it was pretty good."
