Loaded Gun, 136 Grams Of Cannabis Seized From Dorm At North Central College: Prosecutors

Two students were charged in connection with Saturday's incident at North Central College in Naperville.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Two North Central College students face charges after police say they found a loaded handgun, a loaded magazine and 136 grams of cannabis in their dorm room.

Kurtis Cruz, 18, of Indiana, was charged with one felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon in a school. Diyonnes King, 18, of Elgin, were charged with one felony count of delivery of cannabis on school grounds and one felony count of delivery of cannabis (30 to 500 grams).

School safety officers at North Central College called Naperville Police around 1 a.m. Saturday to report "a strong odor of cannabis and loud music playing from the suspects’ dorm room," a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office said.

The campus officers reported that when they went into the room, they found a loaded Gen. 5 Glock 22 10mm and a loaded magazine.

When police got to the scene, they say they found the gun and magazine, which had a 26-round capacity and a bullet in the chamber, in a backpack under Cruz's bed. They also reported finding 39 bags of cannabis, weighing a total of 136 grams, in King's backpack.

“A college campus is supposed to be a safe place for learning and growth, not a place where students and staff alike have to be concerned for their personal safety,” DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin added, “The allegation that Mr. Cruz was in possession of a fully loaded weapon with a twenty-six-capacity extended magazine on a college campus is very alarming."

Cruz is being held at DuPage County Jail ahead of a March 3 court appearance. King was released pretrial. His next court date is scheduled for March 2.
