Majority Of Coronavirus Patients At Edward Hospital Unvaccinated

Recent statistics from Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals show the majority of current coronavirus patients have not been vaccinated.

NAPERVILLE, IL — As the omicron variant spreads quickly throughout Illinois, statistics from Edward Hospital in Naperville show a greater number of unvaccinated patients have been hospitalized for coronavirus in recent months.

Edward Hospital was treating 53 patients with confirmed cases of the coronavirus as of Wednesday. Of them, 42 were unvaccinated and 11 had been vaccinated. Vaccinated patients made up roughly 20 percent of the total patients hospitalized at Edward. These numbers are similar to what the hospital has been seeing for months, records from Edward-Elmhurst Health show.

As of late December, 72 percent of DuPage County residents are fully vaccinated, according to the county health department.

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unvaccinated people are 14 times more likely to die from the coronavirus than those who are vaccinated.

Edward Hospital's sister institution, Elmhurst Hospital, is seeing a similar trend. As of Wednesday, it was treating 42 coronavirus patients. Of them, 30 were unvaccinated and 10 vaccinated. Two were undetermined.
