Man Accused Of Stealing $2K In Items From Amazon Fresh In Naperville

NAPERVILLE, IL — A Chicago man who was out on bond for retail theft is accused stealing more than $2,300 worth of alcohol and other merchandise from an Amazon Fresh store in Naperville on Valentine's Day.

Kelvin Greenfield, 56, was charged with burglary and retail theft in connection with Tuesday's incident.

Police were called to the Amazon Fresh store at 1351 E. Ogden Ave. around 8:15 p.m. for a report that Greenfield and another man had filled a cart and were loading more than 100 items into a truck they had backed into a parking spot.

According to prosecutors, the items included:

  • Four bottles of Patron Silver Tequila
  • Four bottles of of Patron Tequila Reposado
  • Four bottles of Hennessy Cognac
  • One bottle of Remy Martin
  • One 18-pack of Modelo Especial
  • 89 "miscellaneous items"

"According to the National Retail Federation, it is estimated that in 2021, United States’ retailers lost approximately $34.965 billion due to non-employee theft," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

He continued, “That number is just staggering. These losses affect not just the businesses in lost revenue or the employees in lost hours or wages, but also consumers in higher prices. The allegations that Mr. Greenfield and another man entered the Amazon Fresh store with the intent to steal merchandise will not be tolerated in DuPage County."

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres added, "I’d like to commend the store employees who took action and called 9-1-1 as well as our patrol officers, whose swift response resulted in the apprehension of one of the suspects. This is a perfect example of the great partnership this department has with our community members, who do the right thing and speak up when they see a crime being committed. I’d like to encourage everyone to keep being vigilant and call 9-1-1 when you see something that you know is wrong or concerns you."

Greenfield is currently being held in DuPage County Jail on $100,000 bond. He is set to appear in court again on March 13.
