Man Fatally Shot By Naperville Police Identified

The 28-year-old was killed Friday after police say he charged an officer with a hatchet.

NAPERVILLE, IL — The man fatally shot by a Naperville police officer on Friday has been identified by the DuPage County Coroner as Edward C. Samaan, 28.

Samaan was a resident of Naperville, according to the coroner's office.

He was fatally shot Friday morning after police say he "charged" at an officer with a hatchet.

The officer was conducting an unrelated traffic stop on another vehicle around 11 a.m. when police said Samaan pulled up next to the vehicle and got out of his car. Officials said Samaan then charged at the officer with the hatchet in his hand, and the officer fired at him.

Samaan was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police released a still image Friday from the officer's body-worn camera.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT).

An obituary for Samaan said he was a beloved son and cherished brother who loved body building and painting.
