Man Gets 5 Years For Throwing Explosive At Naperville Restaurant

NAPERVILLE, IL — An Aurora man was sentenced to five years in federal prison Thursday for throwing an explosive device through a window at Egg Harbor Cafe in Naperville during riots that broke out on June 1, 2020. Diego Vargas, 27, also used a baseball bat and metal pole to try to break into an ATM in Aurora on May 31, 2020, authorities say.
Vargas was initially charged with one count of maliciously attempting to damage and destroy a building by means of an explosive device. After pleading guilty to this charge in June 2021, Vargas was accused of burglarizing Pandora Jewelryand kicking and punching the windows of Beidelman Furniture during the looting in downtown Naperville.
Naperville police estimate between 250 and 300 people vandalized and looted downtown Naperville June 1, 2020, damaging more than 30 businesses. Police arrested 11 people in connection with these incidents and other burglaries that took place throughout the city that same night.
