Man With Machete Threatened Building Employees At Apartment In Naperville: Police

NAPERVILLE, IL — Police say a Naperville man used a machete to threaten residents outside a apartment building in the 300 block of N. Charles Ave. Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel O’Neill, 35, was charged with criminal damage to government supported property, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless conduct, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property in connection with the incident.

Officers were called to the scene around 2 p.m. for a report of a man with who "brandished a machete-style knife in a threatening way," a news release said.

According to police, O'Neill came after two of the building's employees with the machete. They ran into a maintenance room and O'Neill is accused of following them and then using the weapon to hit the door and try to get into the room.

Police say O'Neill then went back to his apartment and barricaded himself inside for "several hours."

O'Neill is accused of refusing to respond when police and crisis negotiators tried to contact him.

Police then flew a drone into the apartment, but O'Neill is accused of disabling the drone and tossing it out of a window.

O'Neill exited after a distraction device was used and he was taken into custody.
