MRSA Found in 2 Naperville Central Football Players

NAPERVILLE, IL — Two cases of MRSA, a type of staph infection, have been found at Naperville Central.

The infected students were members of the varsity football team, according to a report from ABC 7.

DuPage County Health Department spokesman Dan Bolger told the station they were notified of the infections Wednesday.

MRSA is resistant to several antibiotics and is spread through contact with an infected wound or by sharing personal items, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

“MRSA infection risk can be increased when a person is in activities or places that involve crowding, skin-to-skin contact, and shared equipment or supplies,” the CDC said.

According to the report, a school custodian wiped down equipment and rooms used by the football team.

Naperville School District 203 Communications Director MIchelle Fregoso told the Chicago Tribune that only two students were treated and have since been cleared of MRSA.
