Napervile Man Faces Prison Time for Stealing Over $332,000 in Military Equipment

A 51-year-old Naperville man faces prison time after admitting to stealing over 150 computers and communication devices valued at more than $332,000 while working as a defense contractor in Afghanistan, the Daily Herald reports.
Timothy L. Maurer, a former systems administrator for contractor Raytheon Corp., was charged with theft of government property last month after authorities said he resold the stolen equipment, according to the article.
He entered a guilty plea Monday to the charge and now faces up to 2 1/2 years in prison when he is sentenced in April, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Maurer was assigned to Shindand Air Base in western Afghanistan and allegedly began stealing the high-end computer equipment from secure areas of the base starting in December 2013, according to the article.
The Chicago Tribune reports that in January 2014 Maurer began communicating with vendors and packed up the stolen equipment to ship to the vendors, which was sold for about $150,000. Maurer was paid via PayPal, according to the article.

Court documents indicated that “no sensitive military information was compromised” during the scheme, according to the Chicago Tribune.
