Naperville Firefighters Extinguish Rutgers Court Structure Fire

At 10:32 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a call for a structure fire at one-story residential building located in the 1700 block of Rutgers Court. Naperville 911 (PSAP) dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel, including an incident commander and incident safety officer to the reported address.

At 10:37 p.m., Engine 2 arrived on scene and identified a fire on the exterior of the building that was making its way inside the home. Engine 2 completed a 360-degree survey of the structure and confirmed all four occupants and two dogs were out of the home. The crew of Engine 2 and supporting suppression units began a fire attack by advancing a hose line to the front of the home and darkening down the fire on the outside, which was found to be fed by a natural gas line that had ruptured.

Upon initial entry into the home, Engine 2 found heavy fire in the crawl space and in the attic of the home. All companies transitioned to a defensive operation. The gas line was crimped to slow the free flow of natural gas. Once the outside fire was knocked and the gas shut off by Nicor, crews on scene advanced hose lines to extinguish the fire in the crawl space areas under the home and in the attic. Crews fully extinguished all areas fire within 60 minutes of arrival. Overhaul and ventilation were conducted to expose any areas of high heat and remove smoke from the building.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police Department; The Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development Team (TED); The Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District; Naperville Fire Department Fire Investigators; Nicor and the Naperville Electric Department. Station Coverage was provided by the Plainfield Fire Protection District and the Darian-Woodridge Fire Protection District. The fire is currently under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters while operating on scene. The building was deemed to be uninhabitable by the Naperville TED Department.
