Erroneous Tip, Increased Police Presence at Naperville North Keep Students at Bay

An anonymous tip led to higher police presence at the school, but was found to be not credible.

NAPERVILLE, IL -- School attendance was down Thursday at Naperville North as an anonymous tip left via the school's Tip203 program boosted police presence in the area of the school. On average, 75 of the 2,500 students are not in attendance, but on Thursday, that number doubled. The tip prompted an email alerting parents that there would be extra police presence at the school, though there was found to be no credible threat.

Though there was no actual reason to fear attending school Thursday, threats to schools are always taken seriously, police said.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story took comments made by Naperville Police Commander Lou Cammiso to another news outlet out of context and incorrectly attributed a comment to Cammiso stating that false tips waste the time and resources of police department. That comment was never made by Cammiso, who stated that all tips are taken seriously by the police department. Patch apologizes for the errors.
