Naperville Police Arrest 12 Drunk Drivers During Labor Day Campaign

NAPERVILLE, IL — Despite plenty of warning from the Naperville Police Department, 12 people were arrested for drunk driving over a Labor Day crackdown.

In addition, nine seat belt citations were written – all of which occurred during nighttime hours. Additional citations and arrests included:

• 87 speeding

• 10 no insurance

• 4 suspended driver’s license

• 3 drug related offenses

“Law enforcement officers have one of the toughest jobs in the country. Day and night, 24/7, we work tirelessly to protect citizens, seeing our fair share of troubling and devastating scenes,” said Sgt. Derek Zook in a news release. “Drunk driving crashes are all too familiar.”

Nationally in 2014, there were 9,967 people killed in drunk driving crashes, making up nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities that year. On average, more than 10,000 people died each year from 2010 to 2014 in drunk driving crashes. For these reasons, Naperville Police joined forces with other law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners throughout the state in the Illinois Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown.

“As traffic safety partners, we do our best to make sure drivers and road users are safe. Yet there’s still so much for us to do,” said Sgt. Zook. “Help us spread the message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

The crackdown, part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns, was made possible by federal highway safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
