Naperville Police See Uptick In Fireworks Complaints In 2020

NAPERVILLE, IL — If you've been hearing fireworks go off in Naperville at random times, you aren't alone. The Naperville Police Department has seen an uptick in fireworks complaints in 2020 compared to 2019, according to city spokesperson Kelley Munch.

Munch told Patch between June 1 and June 29 in 2020, there were 37 fireworks complaints called in to the police department. During the same timeframe in 2019, the police department had just eight complaints about fireworks.

In 2018, 17 people called to complain about fireworks, whereas 43 people called with fireworks complaints in 2017, Munch said.

Munch told Patch it's "difficult to pinpoint" the reason there are more calls. They added, "Were fewer people lighting off fireworks in 2018 and 2019 or did fewer people call us to complain? We just don’t know."

Munch added that the police department will be "appropriately staffed on the 4th of July to handle any calls that come in."

Fireworks are illegal for residents to buy or sell in Illinois, but you can still see them set off at Naperville's fireworks show at Frontier Park Sports Complex on July 4. The show starts at 9:30 p.m.
