Naperville Residents Advised To Be Careful In Dealing With Bats
The warning comes after a little brown bat was found at a Naperville apartment building and later tested positive for rabies, officials say.
NAPERVILLE, IL — The Naperville Police Department is warning area residents that if they come across a bat in their home or business not to make contact after a little brown bat that was found at an area apartment building over the weekend tested positive for rabies.
Police said a little brown bat was found in the hallway at the Fifteen98 apartments on Fairway Drive on Saturday. The village’s animal control department later tested the bat and found that it tested positive for rabies.
Residents who come into contact with a bat at their home or business is asked to contact Naperville Animal Control or the Naperville Police Department. If possible, residents should close to the door where they located the bat and wait for animal control to arrive.

The Illinois Department of Health reports that less than 5 percent of bats who are tested for rabies are found to be rabid. Less than 1 percent of rabid bats make up the entire bat population, officials said.
