Naperville Sunrise Rotary St. Paddy’s Day 5K Takes Virtual Form

Runners and walkers can use a GPS app to track their times on or before May 17.

NAPERVILLE, IL — The Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise's St. Paddy's Day 5K couldn't go on as scheduled due to the new coronavirus shutdown, so the race will be conducted in a virtual format. Those runners and walkers who already signed up for the race may use "a GPS app to run, walk, or jog 5K before or on May 17" and can submit their times for consideration on an honor system, race organizers said in a news release.

Racers should have received a link on April 21 in their emails explaining how to participate virtually. Those who run are encouraged to snap pics and share photos with the Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise, who added that prizes will also be awarded for fun outfits.

Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise President Becky Anderson said in a statement, "In order to maximize value to our sponsors and provide a fun event to thank the over 2000 participants who register for this important fundraiser each year, we thought this was the best possible outcome.”

Anderson added, “The 5K is our largest fundraiser supporting youth and family initiatives in the community. Because we had already made a substantial financial investment in producing the live event before it was cancelled by the City due to the pandemic, we felt it was important to create an event which would capture the fair and honest spirit of Rotary- Service Above Self.”
