Police Urge Caution After Text Scams Reported In Naperville
Police say the scammers send a text in which they pose as a bank representative trying to verify a transaction.
NAPERVILLE, IL — Police in Naperville are warning residents to stay vigilant after they have received reports of a text scam.
The text informs victims that they need to call a number to verify a purchase. When the number is called, the scammers pose customer service agents who say they need to cancel the resident's bank card and send a replacement. They then ask for the resident to confirm their PIN.
Police caution that the scammer may have the victim's name, bank account number and other personal information. In a post on Facebook, Naperville police recommend residents take the following steps to protect their accounts:
- Never call a number you received in an unsolicited text message or email
- Visit your bank's website and call the number listed there for verification
- Avoid sharing personal information via text or phone
- Watch out for spoof calls or messages that are made to appear legitimate
If you believe you have been the victim of such a scam, call the Naperville Police Department at 630-420-6666.
