The first Chicago Marathon was held Sept. 25, 1977, and was known as the Mayor Daley Marathon. The race drew 4,200 runners, making it the largest marathon in the world, according to the Chicago Marathon website. The race has been held every year since then except for 1987 due to a loss in sponsorship. However, a half-marathon was organized that year.
