Surge In Drivers Fleeing Cops Prompts Ordinance In Naperville: Report

Under the new ordinance fines will be imposed against drivers who flee police in Naperville, Daily Herald reports.

NAPERVILLE, IL —After a sharp increase in drivers fleeing from police in the past six months, Naperville officials passed an ordinance that would impose a $900 fine on drivers who attempt to flee or elude police, Daily Herald reports.

The Naperville Police Department recently released its mid-year crime statistics, which showed that there were 68 fleeing and eluding incidents reported in the first six months of 2022. This reflects an increase of nearly 24 percent when compared to the first six months of 2021, when Naperville police responded to 55 fleeing and eluding incidents.

The ordinance, which takes effect at the start of 2023, aims to help Naperville recoup funds spent on investigations linked to fleeing and eluding. Police in Naperville only pursue fleeing drivers in the event of a "forcible felony," which is a "common law enforcement policy," according to Daily Herald.
