Surge In Thefts, Overdoses In Naperville: Mid-Year Crime Statistics
The Naperville Police Department released its 2023 mid-year crime statistics. Police say most of the incidents have been property crimes.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Most of the crimes committed in Naperville to date in 2023 have been property crimes, according to the police department's recently released Mid-Year Crime Statistics. The report, which evaluates data from crimes reported in Naperville Jan. 1 through June 30, also showed there had been no murders in the city during the first half of 2023.
According to the report, property crimes have been most prevalent in Naperville during the first half of 2023, accounting for 65 percent of crimes reported in the city. Crimes against people, though, have declined when compared to 2022's statistics.

Property Crimes
- Blackmail/extortion: 14
- Burglary: 46
- Counterfeiting/forgery: 29
- Credit card: 5
- Impersonation: 69
- Miscellaneous theft: 245
- Shoplifting: 166
- Theft from motor vehicle: 69
Burglaries declined in the first half of 2023 by 23 percent when compared to 2022's statistics. Motor vehicle theft declined slightly, but miscellaneous theft rose dramatically, by nearly 25 percent in that time.

Crimes Against People
- Aggravated Assault: 15
- Assault: 322
- Intimidation: 139
- Rape: 11
With zero murders in the first half of 2023 as opposed to two in 2022, Naperville is showing a decline in violent crimes against people. Incidences of rape had declined by more than 100 percent, as 2022's mid-year report indicated 23 incidences, as opposed to 11 in the first half of 2023. Assaults had declined by 30 percent in the first half of 2023, compared to the same timeframe in 2022.
Drug Overdoses and Crimes
- Drug equipment violations: 21
- Narcotic violations: 116
So far in 2023, Naperville has seen six fatal drug overdoses, which was twice the number of fatal drug overdoses in 2022. There was also a marked rise in nonfatal drug overdoses. In 2022's mid-year report, there were 19 overdoses attributed to prescription drugs and heroin. Early 2023's data showed 45 drug overdoses in the city.
Weapons Law Violations
Weapons violations showed a notable decline, falling from 77 incidents in early 2022, to 54 incidents in the first half of 2023.
In a statement, Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said, "As we enter the second half of 2023, we ask that residents continue to practice situational awareness and report suspicious activity or concerning behavior to our department. As the saying goes, if you 'See Something, Say Something.' That community partnership, along with NPD’s proactive efforts, will keep Naperville one of the safest cities of its size in America."
