When searching for a new job, timing is everything and understanding when employers are hiring gives you the advantage.

Most companies utilize an annual recruitment cycle divided into four quarters over the course of the year. Fiscal years vary, but the first quarter for many companies coincides with the calendar, making January a big-hiring month.

According to John Rossheim, Monster’s Senior Contributing Writer, “Major hiring initiatives may follow close on the heels of the holidays and summer.”

Additionally, hiring efforts surge in the early months because of the lull during the winter holidays. Melanie Holmes, Vice President at ManPowerGroup, tells Forbes, “The end of the year tends to be a slower time for new hires. Initiatives are wrapping up and budgets are maxed out. For companies on a calendar-year financial schedule, new budgets start in January, which can mean funding for new positions.”
