NAPERVILLE, IL — Two Naperville political figures have thrown their hats into the ring in the race to become the city's mayor. City Council member Benny White and Liquor Commission member Scott Wehrli hope to replace Mayor Steve Chirico, who announced in July that he would not run for reelection in 2023.

White announced Monday via social media that he had turned in his nominating petition packet, just a week after officially launching his mayoral campaign.

On Nov. 15, White shared on Facebook, "Last night was our campaign launch and fundraiser, and oh, what a night it was. The room was filled with people representing different ethnicities, gender, age, religion, and even political viewpoints--showcasing the diversity of our community and the strength we find when we come together. I am humbled and motivated by this support as I begin my journey to become the next #MayorofNaperville."

He added, "As I mentioned last night, I have long been inspired by the Buffalo Soldiers' motto, 'Ready and Forward,' and I am READY to work with you and for you as we move Naperville FORWARD."

Wehrli filed his packet Monday and wrote on Facebook, "This was an emotional moment for me as I reflected upon those looking down from above and knowing they were there with me in spirit. I’m thankful for the great leaders and mentors I’ve had whose legacy changed the trajectory of my life and Naperville: Mayor George Pradel and NCHS dean/coach and park police chief Bill Young. They taught me and others so much about respect, people and servant leadership."

He added, "Their dedication to making sure our residents felt a sense of community and inclusiveness is something I will always cherish and practice. Naperville is a better place because of people like George and Bill."

Monday marked the first day of election filing, which extends through Nov. 28. The 2023 Consolidated General Election is set for April 4.
