In 2018, DuPage County ACT-SO competitors won nine medals nationally, six of them were gold and seven of them in the STEM category. “ACT-SO's partnership with the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory has elevated the level of projects in the STEM category,” according to DuPage County ACT-SO Co-chair Thomas Reed.
“The Argonne ACT-SO High School Research program has grown over the past five years with a goal to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM. [We have] students from our first year of the partnership entering graduate school and medical school this academic year,” said Reed. They are currently searching for similar partnerships for the other competition category areas of Performing and Visual Arts, Humanities, and Business, according to Reed.
DuPage County ACT-SO also celebrated the fifth year of its Jr. ACT-SO program in which middle school students compete in a team format to build their research, collaboration, teamwork and public speaking skills.

The DuPage County ACT-SO program includes students in DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Will, and parts of Cook County. ACT-SO is a major youth initiative of the NAACP, created by well-known Chicago journalist, Vernon Jarrett.
