NEW LENOX, IL — Lifelong New Lenox resident, decorated veteran, and community pillar Wade Krohn has been named the Grand Marshal of the 2026 Loyalty Day Parade.
Krohn, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, represents a century of service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to both country and community, the Village said in a release. Born in February 1926, in Blue Island and raised in nearby Mokena, Krohn’s early life during the Great Depression instilled in him the values of hard work, resilience, and integrity that would define his life.
At just 18 years old, Krohn answered the call to serve, enlisting in the United States Army Air Forces on January 5, 1944. Following rigorous training, he became an Equipment Mechanic, playing a critical role in maintaining American aircraft during World War II. His skill and leadership earned him the rank of Sergeant.
In June 1945, Krohn was deployed to the remote Aleutian Islands, where he worked under harsh and unforgiving conditions to keep bombers mission-ready in support of operations against enemy forces. His dedication and service were recognized with several honors, including the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal.
After his honorable discharge in 1946, Krohn returned home and continued a life defined by service. He and his wife, Evelyn, raised 10 children, building a strong family rooted in love and responsibility. Professionally, he served as a maintenance worker at Lincoln-Way Central High School and was also a member of the New Lenox Volunteer Fire Department.
Krohn’s commitment to veterans and community remained steadfast throughout his life. As a founding member of the Harry E. Anderson VFW Post 9545 in New Lenox, he helped create a lasting space for veterans to connect, support one another, and honor their shared experiences.
"Wade Krohn embodies the very spirit of Loyalty Day," said New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann. "His courage during wartime and his lifelong dedication to family and community make him an exceptional choice to lead this year’s parade."
The Loyalty Day Parade will take place on Sunday, May 3 in New Lenox, kicking off at 2 p.m. at the corner of Cedar Road and Joliet Highway (see website for route details). This parade’s ongoing theme of honoring our country, flag and all of those who serve, perfectly aligns with Krohn’s legacy of dedication and servant leadership.
The William A. Athans and 18th District VFW Posts’ Loyalty Day Parade was established in 1978 in honor of Loyalty Day, a holiday taking place annually on May 1 to demonstrate loyalty to our country and recognize the heritage of our American freedom. As the Home of Proud Americans, New Lenox is honored to be able to celebrate our country, our flag, and all those who have served or currently serve in our Armed Forces with this annual event. Three generations of the Athans family, along with New Lenox VFW Post 9545, kept the parade in operation until 2020, when it was put on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Village of New Lenox took over the parade operations and brought the event back to life for the residents and businesses who enjoy the festive annual tradition.
