NEW LENOX, IL — A New Lenox woman lost nearly $3,000 to a scammer posing as someone from her bank, according to New Lenox police reports.
Police on Aug. 20 were called to a home on Tanaga Basin for a report of deceptive practices. A woman there told police she had been contacted by a woman who purported to work for the her bank.
The caller told the woman that someone was trying to withdraw funds from the complainant's account. The caller requested the woman switch to a FaceTime call, in which the caller was obscured from view. She then directed the woman to "move sums of money between accounts and to other people," according to police reports.
The woman was then instructed to withdraw cash and put it on Chime cards that were provided by the caller. The caller then requested more money, and the woman then realized it was a scam, according to police reports.
The victim lost approximately $2,733 due to the incident, according to police.
