Athlete of the Week: Warriors' Fifer Is the Table Setter

Lincoln-Way West leadoff man Dan Fifer sets the stage for the Warriors by getting on base often, and he can take charge on the mound, too.

Most baseball coaches would agree that the most crucial attribute of a good leadoff man is the ability to get on base often.

While having a good eye, good base-running skills, speed and a willingness to work deep counts certainly are important, being able to find ways to get on base regularly has to be at the top of the list.

Lincoln-Way West's Dan Fifer has been getting on base a lot this season, and he was especially proficient at it during the past week.

The Warriors scored in double digits in three games during the past week, averaging 14 runs in those contests. Fifer drove in two runs in a 12-4 win over Thornwood and had a 3-for-5 game with two runs in Friday's 14-5 win against Lincoln-Way Central.

On Saturday, it was Fifer’s turn to star on the mound. He pitched a five-hitter in the Warriors’ 7-3 win over Joliet West.
