Baldermann Forms Committee to Repair Memorial

Group will meet this month to gather estimates.

Plans are underway to repair the Veterans Memorial, according to Mayor Tim Baldermann.

According to a story in the Southtown Star by reporter Erin Gallagher, the mayor appointed a 7-member committee that plans to meet this month.

In addition to the mayor, the members include two representatives from each of the military fraternal organizations, the VFW and the American Legion.

Also on the committee are Trustee David Butterfield and village public works director Brian Williams.

The first task of the committee is to assess the cost of the repairs, Baldermann said. The memorial was vandalized in September, which broke four of the five granite monuments. Each monument represented a branch of the military.

Early estimates suggested it could cost as much as $50,000 to repair the damage. However, those were guesses, according to VFW quartermaster Larry Paveza.

Police arrested Brian Sundstrom, 26, whom they say is a homeless man from Bourbonnais. Sundstrom is charged with felony criminal damage to state supported property.
