Book Review: 'One for the Money' by Janet Evanovich

Every week, a public library employee will suggest a new item to check out from their collection.

Editor's note: Every week, staff at the will suggest one book, DVD or other item to check out from the library.

  • Type: Novel
  • Title: One for the Money
  • Author: Janet Evanovich

Originally written in 1994 and the first in a long string of successful novels written by Janet Evanovich, One for the Money introduces the now famous character of Stephanie Plum and explains how she wound up as a bounty hunter and the adventures that, somewhat expectedly, come with the profession.

Knowing that the series goes on for some years to follow eliminates the concern that the main character might get killed along the way, but, as the saying goes, it really is about the journey.

Stephanie’s character has endearing everyday girl next door qualities that many women can relate to and she finds herself in situations, sometimes through no fault of her own, that are also true to real life.

Who hasn’t had a car break down at what seems like the worst time ever, right? In addition, many of the other characters, from Joe Morelli to Grandma Mazur bring additional dimension to the bounty hunter and make her real and well rounded.

Most of us don’t equate bounty hunter with someone who goes to her parents for dinner and endures the, often humorous to the reader, remarks of a spunky old lady.

So, it really was my good fortune to grab and finish this book just before any publicity for the movie began. Good luck getting a copy from a library now, but you can place a hold and wait for it as I am certain the book is more detailed than the movie could ever be.

And, as is the case with books turned movie, I am not certain the characters will look as I picture them. I do think the story line will keep the attention of the reader and/or moviegoer, which ever you prefer. Definitely recommended for a lighthearted adventure story and anxious to see the movie!
