Let the Spring Cleaning Begin!

Chemicals stored under the cabinet, in the garage, the storage shed or medicine cabinet can be discarded this Saturday in Channahon. Will County is offering their
first Household Hazardous Waste Collection event of the year in the parking lot
of Channahon United Methodist Church, located at 24751 Eames Street. 

The collection is 8am to 3pm and offers an additional electronics
collection.  Consider kicking off your spring cleaning this week – just check the lists below to learn the variety of items being accepted for reuse, recycling and proper disposal.

The household hazardous materials list:

• Oil-Based Paints and Stains, Spray Paint, Aerosol Paints
• Paint Thinners
• Solvents
• Drain Cleaners
• Old/Unwanted Medication
• Cleaning Products
• Rechargeable Batteries, Automotive/ Boat Batteries
• Mercury & mercury items
• Pesticides
• Lawn & garden chemicals and fertilizers
• Motor Old, Used Oil Filters, Old gasoline, Antifreeze, All Automotive Fluids
• Fluorescent Light Bulbs, Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)
• Pool Chemicals
• Driveway Sealer

The electronics list:

• Personal Computers (PCs), Laptops, Monitors, Keyboards, Electronic Mice, Modems, Hard Drives, CD ROM/Zip/Tape Drives, Cords, Cables, USBs, Power Strips, USP (Battery Backups), CDs, DVDs, VHS Tapes, Floppies, any computer related items
• Printers (laser, ink jet, dot matrix, etc.), Copier, Fax, Scanners
• Televisions, VCRs, DVD Players, Laser Disc Players, Blue Rays, Cable and Satellite Receivers, Digital Converter Boxes, Remote Control Devices, Radios, MP3 players, Two-way Radios, Speakers, Stereo Systems

• Vacuum Cleaners (no bags), Carpet Sweepers

• Metal Tools (drills, screwdrivers, saws, sanders, etc.)
• Calculators, Adding Machines, Typewriters, Word Processors, Postage Machines, Paper Shredders

Latex paint is NOT accepted because it is not hazardous. Most Ace Hardware stores in Will County are accepting it for recycling for a small fee. If you prefer to
dispose of it with charge, consider using kitty litter to absorb and harden it.
Once it is dried out, it can be placed in the garbage or the hardened paint can
be knocked out of the can, and the empty metal can may be recycled. Either way,
the lid must be off the can so the collection driver sees there is no liquid.
