33And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ 34And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’
~ Mark 3:33-35
Have you sometimes wondered why friends can sometimes seem closer than family? Family is important, don’t get me wrong, but there are those special, dear friends that sometimes seem closer to us than our blood relatives at times. Maybe there have been miscommunications within you’re your blood family or you see them very little, live hundreds of miles apart from each other, or maybe the only thing you have in common is that you are related by blood. Friends, on the other hand, usually have several things in common with you that you can bond with and keep you close. One of the greatest connectional bonds is Christ!

Through Christ, we have become “adopted” into God’s family – making us “brothers and sisters in Christ!” We are there for each other in good times and in bad – supporting one another through prayer – comforting one another through the difficult points in our lives and celebrating the happier moments of life together. That is what it is like in your “church family” as well as the Christian faith as a whole. We become part of a larger, loving support group than what God originally started us out with – our blood family. God has truly provided us with all that we need. Not only is He with us always, but He has given us great Christian brothers and sisters to walk together through our earthly life with so that we need never feel alone.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving me not only my immediate “blood-related” family, but the vast number of brothers and sisters that have been “adopted” into Your family through Christ and His saving grace. Thank you for always being with us and for giving us these siblings to walk with us through the good and bad times in our lives so that we can not only share our joy together, but support each other when the burdens of life begin to weigh us down. Amen.
