Brian Smith currently of Wilmington, IL has been fighting Cancer for the past 3 years. He is a New Lenox native, where he went to school and attended Lincoln-Way Central High School graduation class 2000.
In late 2012, Brian was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer which had spread to his liver. With confidence, because of his young age, Brian & his doctors were optimistic that he would beat it. After many rounds of Chemotherapy and Radiation, two (2) unsuccessful liver surgeries (March 2013 & November 2013), a rectal surgery (February 2014), broken ribs, and being out of work since September 2013 the medical bills have become overwhelming for him and his wife, Jacki.
After further research and treatment, Brian had major liver surgery (May 2014) at UIC, the first of its kind performed in Illinois. He had a 50/50 percent chance of survival. It consisted of a 27-hour procedure where his liver was removed entirely and 80% of it (cancerous) was cut off. The remaining 20% was put back in to regenerate. He spent 2 months in intensive care. Since then, he’s had many ER visits due to complications of these surgeries. In August 2014, the Cancer spread rapidly again in his colon, liver, bones, & lungs. So bad in the bones that it fractured his pelvic bone. Currently he is home on Nutrition to get 1600 calories daily to prevent his organs from shutting down. His strength and spirits are fading.
