Data Breach At Silver Cross May Have Affected Thousands

A Silver Cross Hospital vendor's software upgrade may have compromised information for up to 9,000 patients.

NEW LENOX, IL — A data breach at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox may have resulted in thousands of patients' personal information having been compromise. The patient information may have leaked onto the internet earlier in 2017 after a hospital vendor that manages part of its website upgraded its software, according to a Daily Southtown report. The hospital has stated it has found "no evidence" that anyone has improperly used the information, however.

The patients who may have been affected - nearly 9,000 of them - received a letter earlier this month informing them of the breach. Those affected were the patients who typed their information of forms on the Silver Cross website. It includes names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and health insurance numbers.

The Southtown report indicates the vendor's upgrade may have reconfigured some security settings, which resulted in the breach.
