District 122 Sixth Grader Will Compete At State GeoBee
Benjamin Carlson has been chosen as a finalist for the 2019 National GeoBee State Competition.
NEW LENOX, IL — District 122 sixth grader Benjamin Carlson has been chosen as a finalist for the 2019 National GeoBee State Competition. Carlson took an online qualifying test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.
The top 100 scoring students were then chosen to attend the state GeoBee. Carlson, who attends Spencer Crossing, will compete at the state competition on March 29 at Heartland Community College in Normal.
State champions then travel to the National Geographic Headquartersto compete in the national championship. The National Championship will be held May 19-22 in Washington, D.C.

According to the event website, the national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership in National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
