EJ&E Crossing at Gougar Road Closed for 2 Weeks

Canadian National Railway is doing construction work at the crossing in south New Lenox.

The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway crossing at Gougar Road will be closed starting at 6 a.m. today for construction.

The crossing, which is just south of Lincoln-Way West High School on Gougar Road, will be closed until 6:30 p.m. July 1. Canadian National Railway is conducting work on the Joliet to Nelson Double Track Project, which began in October 2010. The project will add a second track along the EJ&E mainline between North Rowell Avenue in Joliet and Nelson Road in New Lenox.

A detour will be posted for motorists that involved Ellis Court (west), Cherry Hill Road (south) and Laraway Road (east). For more information, call the Department of Public Works at 815-724-4200.

In December, the Village of New Lenox reached an agreement with Canadian National to have the railway in the village to make them safe for quiet zones. Canadian National also agreed to spend $240,000 for a landscape plan to reduce noise for nearby residents and equipment to notify emergency respondents when trains are near.
