23 Thus says the Lord: Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth; 24but let those who boast boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the Lord; I act with steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord. ~ Jeremiah 9:23-24
We all like to take pride in what we do. Some like to be acknowledged constantly for how much they know, how physically strong they are or how much they earn. Some are content to “do their thing” and not worry about the accolades that others crave in life. But what really matters to God?
God wants us to put Him first in our lives. If we are to seek knowledge and wisdom, we are to do so through His Word – not all of the human resources around us. The knowledge and wisdom we can glean from the past are all there in the Bible. The wealth we need to gain is this very knowledge available at our fingertips. We are to seek justice for those around us and to do the “right thing” in God’s eyes – not necessarily what others around us may feel we should do. Like part of the lyrics from the song “Courageous” by Casting Crowns, we are to “Seek justice, Love mercy, Walk humbly with your God.” This is what God wants from us. Are you ready to spend more time seeking to know God better and to serve Him by seeking the justice lacking in society today? Are you ready to do the “right thing” in God’s eyes? Now is the time to answer His call to action. He’s watching and waiting for you to do just that.

We so often forget to put You and Your will before our own. Things around us seem to pull us away from the close relationship we so desire with You. Help us, Lord, to return to putting You first in our lives. Help us to seek the justice that is lacking in the world around us; love the forgiveness that not only You give us, but that we extend to those around us; and to fall back into step with You as we humbly walk the path You desire for us to take through this life You have given us. Amen.
