First Step in Music Education: Affordable Preschool Music Classes

The Music in the Box Classes, offered by The Music Connection of Orland Park and Frankfort, have 6 different charming curriculums for children and their parents to begin to develop the lifelong love of music and development of the skills for music making. Children begin in these classes from ages 0-5.

“Now that we have been using this curriculum for several years,” stated Kuester, “we see how the children naturally develop.” The teachers, referred to as ‘Music Motivators!’ use a variety of styles of music appealing to all people and cultures. Many of the tunes used to sing songs (such as the “Clean Up Song” and the “Goodbye Song”) are the tunes of the Suzuki melodies the children play on their chosen instruments in just a few years after they “graduate” from their preschool curriculum.

Around ages 2 ½-5, many of the parents who have attended the classes with their children for several years will invariably ask “What’s next?”

Kuester continues, “When parents are ready for the next step, we then move them right into the Music Masters 3 classes. In this class, which continues to incorporate music, movement, and song, adds some introductory lessons in theory, rhythm, and pre-piano.”

After the students have attended these classes for 6 months-2 years, depending on age and readiness, students explore instruments of interest by taking a class such as try it and see for piano, violin, or guitar. Some also continue to enjoy singing with Children’s Choir. “In many cases, our students and parents will opt to go right into private lessons instead of a class,” stated Kuester.

Very often, the first instrument (and for many the only) is the piano. “Piano is a wonderful foundational instrument,” exclaims Janet. “Even if a child settles on a different instrument later, the piano lessons give the child a great musical education that makes the learning of a 2nd instrument much quicker and easier.”
