Funds for Charity Event Stolen from New Lenox Business

Dragon Fire Karate needs the community's help to make sure the Toys for Tots event happens.

A New Lenox karate studio is asking for the public’s help after money raised to hold a charity event was stolen.

Dragon Fire Karate, 132 W. Illinois Highway, organizes an annual Toys for Tots event to help collect toys for donation to children in need. The occasion is covered by money from ticket sales. Without it, that event is in jeopardy, staff wrote on a GoFundMe page.

The funds were all cash, owner Joe Roque said. He declined to give more information, as police are investigating the incident. Authorities say there is little hope of recovering the funds.

“We are devastated that this occurred,” said Roque. ”We can’t understand how someone can take money that is for a fundraiser for children. It saddens us to know that there are people like this out there that have no values for anyone or anything but themselves.”

The event is set for Dec. 5, and the fundraising goal is $5,000. Event information can be found at www.dragonfirekarate.com. See the GoFundMe below, or click here.
