Gimme 5: Providence's Potempa Has Plate Covered

Senior catcher and cleanup hitter Dan Potempa likes what he's seen behind the plate, and at it, during a storybook run for the Celtics.

No one’s seen Providence’s 36 (and counting) wins this season better than catcher Dan Potempa.

Not only does he get to work with standouts Brandon Magallones, Matt Trowbridge and Collin McEnery, among others, but also he gets to hit cleanup in a lineup that features Kevin DeFilippis, Joe Houlihan and the powerful Sam Travis batting just in front of him.

Potempa helped the Celtics celebrate Saturday’s Class 4A Neuqua Valley Sectional championship with his glove and bat. He caught Trowbridge and McEnery, who combined to limit Downers Grove South to three runs in a 12-3 victory for Providence, but he had even more fun in the box, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and two-run double.
