Gun Range, Gun Shops Could Soon Be Allowed in New Lenox

Trustees consider changing zoning laws to allow gun-related businesses to open in New Lenox.

NEW LENOX, IL - Gun shops and indoor gun ranges could be coming to New Lenox if village trustees pass an ordinance allowing them to operate here this month.

The ordinance is a result of one business owner’s interest in opening a gun range in New Lenox and would allow both gun shops and indoor gun ranges in some commercially and industrially zoned portions of town, according to a report from the Herald-News.

The current village zoning ordinance does not allow for these types of businesses, but Mayor Tim Baldermann told the Herald-News the board is in favor of having one in the community and making sure it opens at a properly zoned location is the main concern.

The proposed ordinance would allow gun shops in a C-3 general business and C-7 regional shopping districts and gun ranges in I-1 limited industrial districts. The ordinance states these would not negatively impact public health and safety.

No specific plans for the gun range that’s been discussed have been announced.
