Joliet Montessori School Wins Environmental Award
JMS recognized for exceptional environmental stewardship; adolescents accept certificate on behalf of the school
Since 1998, the Will County Earth Flag School Program has encouraged area schools to reduce, reuse and recycle, recognizing those that meet at least four of 13 criteria for eco-friendly operation. This year, Joliet Montessori School (JMS) was certified for meeting more than half of those 13 standards, including those for waste-free lunch, gardening, composting and recycling.
The school’s adolescent class—which had recycled old t-shirts into reusable shopping bags and sold them at their own farm stand—accepted the award on May 10th for the school.
Donna Martin, Interim Head of School at JMS, couldn’t be prouder of all her students. “Montessori education has a deep focus on problem solving and personal initiative. Both of them play an enormous role in how we take on environmental challenges, or indeed any educational or social challenges.”
