Local Girl Scout Earns Highest Award

New Lenox Girl Scout Completes Gold Award

New Lenox Girl Scout, Amanda Bozezetti recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is the most prestigious award a Girl Scout can receive. The criteria for the award include working a minimum of 80 hours on a project that is sustainable in the community. In her Freshman year of High School, Amanda started a tutoring program at Day Break Homeless Shelter in Joliet. After looking at several homeless shelters with her mentor, Tavia Westbrook, she chose Daybreak to help the children and parents. The next task was to coordinate with the shelter to establish the program. She recruited volunteers to help her every week with the tutoring. Every Tuesday during the school year for the past 2 1/2 years she committed an hour of her time with her group of volunteers to tutor kids with their homework. When the homework was completed, the volunteers would entertain the children with games and books allowing the parents an hour to do what they needed. As Amanda completes her Senior year she will continue tutoring the kids with the hope that another troop will take over the project. The project has taught her the value of giving your time to others, especially those less fortunate. She plans to continue doing community service as she enters college next fall.
