Local Single Mother Diagnosed with Incurable Stage IV Breast Cancer Needs Assistance Paying Monthly Bills

Local mother diagnosed with incurable stage IV breast cancer. A fundraiser has been set up to help cover living expenses and Medicaid debt.

Grazyna (Grace) Ferrantino is a 55 year old local single mother of four children living in Streator, IL. Her oldest child is 27 and youngest is 15 years old, and two of the children still live at home with her. She loves taking care of her family and has worked hard keeping them safe and cared for. In her spare time, she volunteers at a local nursing home where she sings and shares the gospel with the residents.

In May 2015, her world was given a strong blow when she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. The cancer has spread throughout her body, forming tumors in her lymph nodes, which is causing her a great deal of pain. Due to the physical constraints, her day-to-day tasks have become more difficult. For this reason, she was forced to quit her job in April 2015. By June 2015, she was re-diagnosed with stage IV, triple negative breast cancer which is deemed incurable. Her only option for treatment is an aggressive chemotherapy regimen.

Since she has had to quit her job, Grazyna has no income and no savings and is currently on Medicaid. Without a steady income from employment, she is unable to pay her monthly bills. Her oldest son and his wife graciously agreed to pay her expenses, but this has put a large burden on them as they work to balance her bills on top of their own. Recently, the family has learned that Medicaid has the legal right to put a lien on her house to recover all or part of the money that they have paid out for her care if she passes away which has caused an immense amount of added stress.
