Did you know more than 15,500 dryer fires are reported each year? With National Fire Prevention Week running from Oct. 8 – 14, you’re local Dryer Vent Wizard of New Lenox reveals the lesser known facts and debunks the myths about the potential dryer fire risks in the home.

As part of the nation’s leading dryer vent repair, cleaning and maintenance franchise, Dryer Vent Wizard of New Lenox owner, Joe Enzenberger shares the following myths and facts behind dryer fires to help homeowners reduce the risk in their homes:

  • Myth: Homeowners Can Run the Dryer While Unattended. Never start the dryer before exiting the home or falling asleep at the risk of a dryer fire sparking and engulfing the room. Run the dryer only when someone is close enough to handle a situation if needed.
  • Fact: Lint is Some of the Most Flammable Material in the Home. Lint is highly flammable material and is the most common source for dryer fire ignition. Avoid lint buildup in the filter by cleaning out the tray after each use. Routinely sweep underneath and behind washers and dryers to keep the area free of lint, debris and other materials.
  • Myth: Cleaning around the Exterior of the Dryer is Sufficient. Dryers should be fully inspected by a professional once a year to clean the interior of the machine and ensure that the duct and appliance are functioning properly.
  • Fact: Decreased Dryer Efficiency is a Sign Something is Wrong. If a homeowner notices clothes begin to dry slower than normal, that’s a sign of restricted airflow which can lead to the appliance overheating and sparking a fire. Homeowners should watch for warning signs that indicate a clogged or obstructed dryer vent and call a professional to identify the cause.
  • Myth: Homeowners Should Place a Cage or Screen around Dryer Vent to Prevent Pests from Entering. The use of pest cages or screens can allow lint to build up which creates a fire hazard and reduces the dryer efficiency. Vents should be checked by a professional for identification of pests or nests.

With dryers causing 92 percent of all reported appliance fires, according to the National Fire Prevention Association, Dryer Vent Wizard recommends homeowners have their dryers inspected by a professional regularly to keep the home as safe as possible.
