New Lenox Boy Scout Troop Holds Merit Badge University At Silver Cross

The first ever Merit Badge University at Silver Cross Hospital was a complete success for Troop 44.

NEW LENOX, IL -- Boy scouts who completed merit badges as part of the New Lenox Troop 44's first Merit Badge University were recognized during an awards ceremony this week at Silver Cross Hospital. The inaugural event, held Sept. 15 at the Silver Cross Conference Center, saw 22 boy scouts working on 72 merit badges and earning a total of 25 in a single day.

“Merit Badge University is a great way for scouts to learn about different fields of knowledge,” said Bill Schade, Troop 44 Scoutmaster. “In just a few hours, they can start a merit badge or tick off those last requirements as they work their way through the ranks to Eagle Scout.”

A dozen volunteer counselors worked with scouts ages 11 to 17 in earning badges for American Cultures, Art, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Collections, Communications, Cycling, Digital Technology, Energy, Environmental Science, Family Life, First Aid, Graphic Arts, Inventing, Programming and Wood Carving, according to a news release from Silver Cross.

“In previous years, our scouts traveled to other Merit Badge University’s outside of our council’s district,” Schade said. “We wanted to provide this same experience close to home and hope to expand the event next year working alongside other local troops.”
