New Lenox Campgrounds Celebrates 150th Year This Weekend

Free events are planned throughout the day on Saturday.

NEW LENOX, IL - The public is invited to walk through the 150-year-old New Lenox campgrounds on Saturday, June 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to craft vendors, visitors can step back in time and witness pioneer crafts at the place originally called Cold Spring, according to Bobbie Baird of the United Methodist Church of Christ.

The following free events are planned throughout the day:

  • Bev Mansfield from Buckskin Etc. will demonstrate the art of treating buckskin for clothing, moccasins and other decorative items with a treatment used by Indians living in the area.
  • Lou Aiello from the Aux Sable Company, will be sharing several authentic Native American crafts for children and allow them to make their own Dream Catcher.
  • The Rev. Kathleen Tovel will demonstrate how settlers spun yarn to be used in making warm clothing for the harsh Illinois winters. She will be using her own spinning wheel and wool from the animals on her farm.
  • Folks from the United Methodist Church of New Lenox, dressed in period clothing will also be roaming about the grounds all day as part of the 150 year celebration.

The wooded grounds are located just off U.S. Route 30, one mile east of Interstate 80 in New Lenox. Enter for parking off Haven Avenue.
