NEW LENOX, IL — Have you ever noticed the volunteers in bright yellow vests assisting at community events throughout New Lenox? Those dedicated individuals are members of the Village’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)—and their work goes far beyond event support.

New Lenox CERT is now accepting applications for its upcoming basic training course, offering residents the chance to build valuable emergency response skills while serving their community.

The free program educates citizens about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills. These skills allow members to assist during disasters when first responders are not immediately available. Course graduates are then welcome to continue on with the CERT program, which consists of monthly training sessions and assisting at a variety of community events.

CERT volunteers receive specialized instruction designed to prepare them for effective action during emergencies and disasters. Training topics include disaster preparedness, basic search and rescue, first aid, fire safety, and team-based emergency response fundamentals. Members learn how to help their neighbors, support first responders, and contribute to community resilience when additional assistance is needed.

“The CERT program empowers everyday residents with the skills and confidence to step in during critical moments,” said Simon Harris, New Lenox CERT Program Coordinator.
