New Lenox Holds Mental Health First Aid Course

Mental Health First Aid teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.

NEW LENOX, IL — The village of New Lenox, its safe community coalition and Sertoma Centre, Inc., will offer a free mental health first aid class on Aug. 12. The class will be held from 1 to 5:30 p.m. via Zoom, and prior to the class, participants will complete a 2-hour, self-paced course, according to a release from the village.

Mental Health First Aid teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. According to a release, this class is ideal for behavioral health professionals, social workers, counselors, first responders and anyone who wants to learn about the warning signs of major depression and suicidal behavior.

Attendees will also learn about the history of mental health first aid in the United States, risk factors and warning signs for non-suicidal self-injury, warning signs of substance abuse dependence, information on trauma, addiction and self-care, and the action plan for individuals addicted to substances, a release states.
