New Lenox Prepares For 2020 Census

This census, the village said it would like to obtain at least a 90 percent response rate.

NEW LENOX, IL - The village of New Lenox is partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to support the 2020 Census. As a partner, the village said it has a goal to engage, educate and encourage community participation in the upcoming Census.

The Census is conducted every 10 years to count the country’s population, which then
determines the number of seats each state receives in the House of Representatives, as well as
funding for state and local governments.

“A complete count is critical for the village of New Lenox because the Census population not only determines the amount of state shared revenue, which includes income tax, use tax and motor fuel tax that the village receives from the state, which is approximately $165 per capita but also to market the village to the types of developers it wants to see invest in New Lenox," Mayor Tim Baldermann said in a release.

The committee devised various ways to help promote the 2020 Census within their specific organizations as well as throughout the community, the village said.

In 2000 and 2010, the response rate for the village of New Lenox was 87 percent and 86 percent
respectively. This year, the village said it would like to obtain at least a 90 percent response rate.
