New Lenox School Board Member Suing District Over Attorney's Fees

The Board member is representing herself in the lawsuit.

A member of the New Lenox School Board has sued the school district over attorney fees she claims they should have paid for her.

Maureen Broderick is representing herself in the lawsuit against New Lenox School District 122.

In her lawsuit, Broderick claimed school board President Nick DiSandro requested she meet with him on Feb. 1, 2013.

“The purpose of the meeting was DiSandro’s desire to discuss alleged civil rights violations and threats to embroil Broderick in litigation made by another board member, Kathy Miller,” the suit said.

Broderick hired the Mokena law firm Bruggeman, Hurst & Associates, the suit said, and they represented her until April 17, 2013, after which the school district’s insurance carrier “assumed Broderick’s defense.”

Broderick submitted an invoice for $5,787.30 worth of Bruggeman, Hurst & Associates’s fees to the school board but on Aug. 21 it “voted not to pay the above referenced legal fees,” the suit said.

In her lawsuit, Broderick claims the “Illinois School Code provides that school districts must defend and indemnify members of school boards against civil rights damage claims and suits.”
